Amethe wasn’t sure why she picked the song she did when Zadra asked her to sing for her.

It told the story of a beautiful winged insect that fell in love with a dark, fearsome bird that harkened death. It was an impossible coupling but before the song ended the two had made it work.

She had been so lost in the song she hadn’t noticed Rege had returned. He stood just inside the door with a look on his face that made her think he’d seen a ghost.

“Oh, my.” Zadra clapped her hands and came to her feet. “I would have never thought your voice could have gotten more beautiful than our days in choir but it is. And that song just…” She wiped the corner of her eye.

“Thank you.”

Zadra fanned herself. “Look at me. You’re making a mess of me. Ganaada will wonder what happened to me.”

“Rege, are you all right?” Amethe asked.

He jerked himself out of whatever deep thoughts had weighed him down. “Yes. Fine.” He moved farther into the room.

“Did you finish your errands?” she asked.

“The main one I needed to, yes.” He went from window to window checking their surroundings. When he heard nothing more from them he looked in their direction. They were both watching him.

Amethe mock-whispered to Zadra, “He’s very serious about security.”

Zadra nodded. “He seems quite dedicated to keeping you safe.” She patted Amethe on the knee. “I like that about him.”

“By the way, I slipped up and told Zadra your real name,” Amethe confessed.

“But don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone,” Zadra reassured him.

He frowned then shook his head. Just then his com unit buzzed, drawing his attention. He looked down at his wrist and scanned the screen. “Excuse me for a moment,” he said then walked over the window as he read whatever message he’d received.

She and Zadra both nodded and returned to their conversation. Amethe tried to focus on what Zadra said but kept getting distracted by Rege’s expressions. His normal frown grew deeper each time he clicked on his com unit. Finally, he looked up and stared out the window.

Based on his faraway gaze she could tell he wasn’t searching the streets for potential enemies. Whatever he’d read now weighed on him.

“We really should be going Amethe. We’ve stayed in one place too long,” Rege finally told her.

Amethe sighed. His words came as no surprise but she didn’t have to like them.

“Must you go so soon?” Zadra asked.

“We must,” Rege insisted.

“I told you we were in a bit of a spot right now and I don’t want to get you into trouble with the local enforcers for sheltering us,” Amethe said.

Zadra waved her hand in their direction. “Oh, pish. They would never dare to set foot up here without an invitation. I could harbor a small army with nuclear weapons and they’d still not question me.”

Amethe raised a brow. “Really?”

“It’s true.” Zadra nodded.

She wasn’t ready to leave. It had been so long since she’d seen any of her former school friends she hated to miss an opportunity to catch up.
